UPDATE
Canterbury City Council has received a phasing plan and confirmation of the start date for the works from their appointed contractor, FM Conway. The works will start on 14th May on Best Lane (not Orange Street) and these works will run through May and June. Works on Orange Street will take place consecutively, in June and July. Works to the Friars will run from July through October, with the junction between these three streets and King Street programmed for resurfacing at the end of October with all works completed in November.
During the works, pedestrian access will be maintained to all addresses, and signs will go up at entrance points to advise that Businesses are Open as Usual. Each street will be worked on in phases, with vehicular access either side of the section of works, and passing alongside or through the works, wherever possible. In the event of emergency vehicle access being required, the vehicle will be able to pass through the construction zone, even if that means that repairs will be required due to the access.
Road diversions are being set up to ensure alternative vehicular access as needed:
- For Best Lane closure between the entrance to Orange Street Car Park and the junction with Orange Street, the diversion will be via the High Street and The Friars
- For Orange Street closure, the diversion will be via Guildhall Street, the High Street and Best Lane. Guildhall Street will become two-way to allow entry and exit for the period of the diversion. The Orange Street car park will remain open with access from either Best Lane or Orange Street throughout the works.
- For The Friars closure, the diversion will be via Best Lane on to the High Street
Although contractors may arrive earlier or later, mechanical noise will not be permitted before 8am or after 6pm.
In the next two weeks, all residential and business properties will receive a letter from the council engineer who will be monitoring the works on a daily basis and who can be contacted in the event of any urgent query. The Contractor will also be available on site daily to answer/assist with any queries residents and businesses may have regarding the scheme.

TEMPORARY ORDER 2018
To allow pedestrian improvement works to be carried out, Kent County Council has made an Order to temporarily prohibit through traffic on sections of Orange Street and Best Lane, Canterbury.
Phased closures are planned from 30 April 2018 as follows. Only one of the roads will be closed at any one time, starting with Orange Street. The closure periods are estimated and may potentially vary, subject to weather and ground conditions.
ORANGE STREET will be closed between the junctions with Palace Street and Best Lane. Closure from 30 April 2018 for an estimated period of approximately 5 weeks Alternative route via Guildhall Street, High Street and Best Lane. The southbound No Entry restriction in respect of Guildhall Street will be suspended so that the road becomes two-way to allow entry and exit.
BEST LANE will then be closed between the entrance to Orange Street Car Park and the junction with Orange Street
Closure currently anticipated to be from 4 June 2018 for approximately 7 weeks. Alternative route via High Street and The Friars.
For both closures it will also be necessary to suspend the Kent County Council (Central Area, Canterbury) (Traffic Regulation) (Consolidation) Order 2001 in respect of Guildhall Street, High Street and St Peter’s Street, to allow the use of these roads for vehicles to follow the prescribed diversion.
Due to the nature of the works, all restrictions will continue to apply outside the working hours.
