You may be aware that Canterbury City Council is installing security bollards around the city centre. A total of 105 automated, manually retractable and static bollards will be installed from July 2019 and will be operational in late autumn. This is in response to counter-terrorism police advice on protecting our city from a potential hostile attack, although there is no specific intelligence to suggest one is imminent. The automated bollards will be connected directly to the council’s CCTV control room via a camera and intercom. An initial leaflet and map was distributed to businesses and residents within the city centre in early June and a ‘drop in’ information session was held at the Guildhall on 12th June.
One of the locations is in Iron Bar Lane by Canterbury Wholefoods. The new bollards will be a mix of both static and manually retractable and will replace the existing row of bollards.
Installation is planned to start on the 29th July 2019 and will take 2 weeks to complete. Because of the historic nature of the city Canterbury Archaeological Trust will be overseeing the excavations and carrying out checks for any antiquities that may be present.
The work will be carried out during normal working hours Monday- Friday. To enable the works to be carried out safely it will be necessary to shut off sections of the road.
Access to properties, shops and businesses will be maintained and disruption will be kept to a minimum. I hope you will appreciate this is a complex installation and I apologise in advance for any inconvenience or disturbance this may cause.
