Canterbury’s Cooking Food & Drink Festival

Canterbury's famous Food and Drink festival has handed over the reins to a new events organiser, promising a fresh take on the 3-day event.   Market Square Group will be putting on the festival called Canterbury’s Cooking and will still be free to enter. Exciting new features are being planned, including a kitchen theatre with demonstrations by chefs, and two comedy nights in a marquee, as well as live music and loads of locally-produced food and drink.   Traders are welcome to apply still, please click here for more information

Kent Green Hop Beer Festival 2023 22nd/23rd/24th September We’re all getting ready to enjoy the launch festival at Canterbury’s Cooking – A Festival of Food & Drink in Dane John Gardens, Canterbury with a massive line up of food, music and entertainment.  See the map here so you know where to find the Beer Tent which opens Friday 22nd September 10am   What is Kent Green Hop beer? Kent Green Hop Beer is beer made with fresh, or green, Kentish hops – instead of using hops that have been dried as is more traditional in brewing. The beers have a characteristic fresh taste because the hops used contain many of the oils that are normally lost when hops are dried.

In January 2023, Canterbury City Council were awarded money from the Levelling Up Fund to deliver our Connected Canterbury – Unlocking the Tales of England project. As part of this project they are proposing to make changes to the public highway at five separate locations in Canterbury.   changes near the Westgate Towers and creation of a Westgate Square. changes near the clocktower and creation of a St George’s Square. changes along St George’s Lane and to the bus station. changes to the pedestrian and cycle routes to the Norman Castle. changes to footways on Pound Lane between The Causeway and St Peter’s Lane.    CCC want to know what you think of our current plans so that, wherever possible, they can incorporate your feedback into the designs. They are holding a drop-in event where you can come and talk to them about the proposals on Saturday 23 September, 10am to 3pm at The Guildhall, St Peter’s Place, Canterbury, CT1 2DB.

Zero Tolerance to Sexual Harassment Training (Am Session)

Licensed and late night city centre businesses are invited by Canterbury BID to attend the next Zero Tolerance to Sexual Harassment and Discrimination Training session on:   Tuesday 26 September | Fruitworks, Jewry Lane. 10am-12noon |  2-4pm (you only need to attend one session).   Refreshments and materials will be provided   Zero Tolerance is a completely FREE accreditation scheme designed specifically for licensed venues in Canterbury City Centre to show they are trained to recognise and tackle sexual harassment and discrimination aimed at both customers and staff. The programme has also been recently revised to include broader elements of equality, diversity and inclusion and to respond to potential spiking incidents. Find out more here

To help avoid the huge environmental impact of materials sourced, manufactured, packaged, transported and then thrown away, the Repair Cafe in Canterbury is here for you to bring along any clothes, furniture, toys, gardening tools, bicycles and household appliances  in need of repair. There is also a clothes swap and energy advice desk. Heritage and the Climate Crisis

HERITAGE AND THE CLIMATE CRISIS: HOW PROTECTING THE PAST CAN SAVE THE FUTURE   You are warmly invited to a talk by Henrietta Billings, director of SAVE Britain’s Heritage.  She will outline the high-profile campaign to stop the demolition of Marks and Spencer’s landmark building on Oxford Street. This early twentieth century department store is at the centre of a raging debate over the future of our high streets and the climate crisis. Henrietta’s talk will chart the story so far – the campaign, the public inquiry and the implications for the future of high streets everywhere.   The Heritage Lecture is an annual event, organised jointly by the Canterbury Society and the Centre for Heritage at the University of Kent.   From 6.00 to 7.30 pm on Friday 6 October in the Templeman Library Lecture Theatre, University of Kent
