The appearance of shopfronts is particularly important in maintaining the appeal of our historic city to local people and visitors. Canterbury City Council carried out a review of shopfronts in the City centre and found that a small number have been altered without permission and that these shopfronts detract from the appearance of the City.
The Council has informed us that they will be writing to those businesses where shopfronts have been altered without listed building consent and will be requiring immediate action.
We are keen to support businesses with this process. New Shopfront Guidelines have been prepared by the Council to highlight the importance of shopfronts and summarises the main messages that are included in the Council’s Planning Design Guidelines for Shopfronts. As part of this process, we will be adding a shopfront training webinar to our training programme to help businesses understand how best to design their shopfronts.
